On Saturday, April 20, 2018, hundreds of skilled union tradespeople with the Will & Grundy County Building Trades and Laborers’ Local 75 donated their labor, many of whom performed specialized tasks, to safely clean the old Joliet prison. Having been shuttered by the state nearly two decades ago, the City of Joliet and the Joliet Area Historical Museum’s goal is to refurbish the old prison on Collins Street and to turn it into a tourist attraction with guided tours. There is a lot of work to be done. Without the hundreds and thousands of dollars of donated labor from union members, the project would not be possible.
